Date's Ebira Project
Building two Japanese style Ebira
Hip mounted quivers for use in Kyudo, Yabusame, and Recreationist Style Combat Archery.
Using micro-hojojutsu techniques, two five millimeter round pieces of rattan are bound together with regular silk thread so that they form an oval shaped unit in cross section.
Using frame forms made of heat resistant plastic, the rattan is then hogtied, also using various micro-hojojutsu techniques and somewhat stouter string.
Special care is taken in the neck area to ensure the rattan does not break.

This is done by soaking the rattan in boiling water for a time suitable enough to insure the wood is softened all the way through to the core. (The red blob on the form is paint from another project, and is not required!!!)

The wood is then dried in place. Here, two different forms are used for two different style projects -
A) A late period style Combat Archery ebira...
B) A late period style Kyujutsu ebira for target points...

The wood is then subject to a two part epoxy spread into the fillets between the wood, outside first, and allowed to dry, insuring that the frames will maintain their shape, and to strengthen them. Then the frames are removed and the insides are epoxy filled and allowed to dry.
